Name:
Brian Collins
Title/Product:
Software Development Engineer in Test, Expression Blend
What inspires you?
Two things. First, creating a product that is not only functional, but one that also feels right to the user. This is obviously very subjective - to me it involves intuitiveness and a natural flow. Second, paying close attention to details that may cause user annoyance or pain - such as gracefully handling errors or other unexpected situations - is just as important as ensuring basic functionality. This can be tricky, because we know our own product so well.
How did you choose to work on this team with this product?
I already knew the Expression Suite was well regarded before I joined the team, and during my interview I was impressed by how sharp and talented the team was. The other thing that struck me was how evident their focus on the user was. And it's true, more than any other product I've worked on, the leadership really engages with users and listens to their feedback.
What’s your favorite feature? Why?
SketchFlow. I love how it provides me with the ability to quickly (very quickly!) create prototypes for the various product and feature ideas that we come up with. Being able to clearly demonstrate as opposed to explaining, with minimal time and effort. I like to knock ideas back & forth with people, so it comes in handy.
How long have you worked on Expression?
I have worked on Expression since August 2008. Prior to that, I spent 7 years as a SDET in Windows.
What does your typical workday look like?
Besides the requisite meetings, my typical day is a mix: I have my standard duties that include writing test code, investigating bugs, and generally doing my part to make sure the features for which I have QA responsibility are rock solid. I tend to work very closely with my corresponding developers and we spend a lot of time discussing our feature, gaming out scenarios, etc. I also try to set aside some time for side projects that might help our product or team, such as a new testing technique.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I've always been an active person who loves the outdoors - biking, running, rock climbing and hiking are my favorite activities. At home, when I'm not spending my free time with my two young children, I like to read and enjoy bouncing business or project ideas around with my friends.
Anything else you'd like to share with the community?
I once climbed Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, in CA.
